When an emergency dental care problem strikes, your first order of business should be calling your emergency dentist in Dallas so we can promptly schedule an appointment for you. • Toothaches: Is something trapped between your teeth? If the pain persists after rinsing and flossing, take an over-the-counter pain reliever like acetaminophen. If there’s any swelling, applying a cold compress to your face in ten-minute intervals can help
• Chipped/Broken Tooth: Retrieve as many pieces of the tooth as you can. Store them in a container with a secure lid and bring them with you to our office. To prevent the jagged edges of the remaining tooth from accidentally piercing your tongue, lips, or the inside of your cheek, cover it with a dab of sugar-free gum. A cold compress can curb swelling.
• Knocked-Out Tooth: You’ll need to move as quickly as possible in this situation. While it’s possible to replant a knocked-out tooth, the chances of success start to rapidly decrease after an hour has passed since the incident. Pick up the tooth without touching the root, rinse it off, and place it in your cheek pocket or a container of milk. This will keep it moist and alive until you arrive at our office.
• Lost Filling/Crown: Rinse off the restoration and use a piece of sugarless gum or a smear of toothpaste to place it back on top of the tooth. Even if you’re not in pain, you should visit us for a permanent reattachment before any decay or damage can develop. In the meantime, avoid chewing with that tooth.

While sudden oral injuries and serious toothaches can’t always be avoided, you can take some precautions to lower your risk of having to take time out of your day to visit your emergency dentist and deal with your emergency dental care issues. These include:

• Brush and floss daily to keep your teeth strong and resistant to cavities and breakage.
• Keep up with your biannual checkups and cleanings. That way, small problems can be treated before they snowball into full-blown emergencies.
• Wear a mouthguard if you play sports and a nightguard if you grind your teeth while sleeping.
• Don’t use your teeth to open bottles or packaging.
• Avoid chewing on extremely hard objects like pens, pencils, ice, fingernails, hard candy, popcorn kernels, etc.
